- The first phase of the Bihar assembly elections on Monday saw a voter turnout of 57 per cent. Polling was held for 49 of 243 constituencies on the state. The Election Commission said this voter turnout is a record for Bihar. In the 2010 assembly elections only 50.85 per cent of the electorate had voted.
- The Supreme Court on Monday formally buried the coffin-gate scandal, involving import of coffins, missiles and munitions at exorbitant prices allegedly for kickbacks, during the Kargil war. The irregularities had come to light after a CAG report highlighted them, estimating the loss at over Rs 24,000 cr. SC threw out the PIL after CBI said that all the accused were discharged by court for lack of evidence.
- Former Pakistan foreign minister Khurshid Kasuri’s book "Neither a hawk, nor a dove - An insider's account of Pakistan's foreign policy" was launched in Mumbai amid tight security. On Monday, Shiv Sena accused Sudheendra Kulkarni, who is the main organizer of the event, of being a "Pakistani agent" and protested the book launch by blackening his face.
- A Chinese court on Monday sentenced Jiang Jiemin, former chief of the state-owned Assets Supervision and Administration Commission, to 16 years in prison for accepting bribes. Apart from accepting bribes, Jiang, 60, was found guilty of holding huge amount of property with unidentified sources and abusing power. His personal assets worth 1 million yuan (about $160,000) were also confiscated.
- British-born economist Angus Deaton has won the 2015 economics Nobel Prize for his work on consumption, poverty and welfare that has helped governments to improve policy through tools such as household surveys and tax changes.
